Guppies, Guppies, Galore!

Over the 4th of July, my boys won some goldfish and guppies out of a baby pool at a carnival. I thought they'd die off immediately, but I promised them I would get a tank and TRY to keep them alive. So off to Walmart we went, I bought the cheapest filter tank they had, and threw in some rocks. I bought three more tank mates for our 5 baby pool fish....two more guppies and an algae eater.
Fast forward 7 months. Of the original 5 baby pool fish, two are still alive and kickin'. Of course, it's the two guppies that survived. (Goldfish have a two week life-cycle, I swear). Anyway, when I bought the two extra guppy tank-mates, they must have been males because the female just had 30+ babies! I have never seen fish be "born" because I had no idea guppies give live birth.
It was quite exciting and educational. I think we'll be shopping for a bigger tank. Or...do any of you want some guppies? They live forever.

I'm extremely jealous! I would have loved to witness the live birth of a couple dozen guppies. Amazing. I'll take a few off your hands if I get to see that kind of magic in 7 months. So you'll have to carefully examine them to make sure I get a male and a female. How do you tell?

That's a pretty cool story, Jen.

I've been waiting for ur post since you've been super busy. Link me up, baby and I will do the same. I love your perspective and it seems like life is never boring @ your house. Also I would love to see any of your artwork!

We've had amazingly good luck with our goldfish lasting 2 years! I didn't know that guppies and goldfish could co-exist, but now that I do, I would love some. I have always wanted a couple of our fish to hook up, but it has never happened...what a sight that must have been!

You have fish?? How come I didn't know that? What other exciting secrets are you hiding from me? :)

I honestly would have loved to see them give birth. I dig stuff like that. If it ever happens again, call me and I'll run right over.

Natalie- the males are smaller and are brighter in color. The females are large and have a big belly (normally they carry between 20-200 babies). When the female is getting ready to give birth, there are dark spots that appear on their backsides.
The only thing is, I did not separate the babies from the males, and unfortunately they are cannibals. I still have about 20 fish left. Mostly females.

Tash- you're linked to me now, sister. Glad to have your blog on my friends list! I will scan some artwork sometime soon for ya.

Lydia- anytime you want some fish, let me know. I'll bring you over a few of each sex. (If I can catch them...they are super fast) Then you too can have a tank full of babies! :)

Mindy- My tank is so small I am not surprised you didn't know about them. Poor Rachel and Juju's fish didn't make it in the hot car, remember? If you want some fish that never die and are easy to take care of, let me know.

We love fish. Clayton and I had the coolest tank set up. We have bought at least 20....goldfish, guppies, cichilds, etc. Who knows...we loved them! We named them all, and hated flushing them when they ended belly up.

We just might have to come over and see the miraculous litter (or school) :)

I just got a female guppy yesterday and I have had the male guppy for about a week. Well about a few hours after I put it in the tank, the female guppy gave birth, however I did not wittness it(I'm assuming it was already pregnant). I am new to the whole fish tank hobby so I really have no idea what to do with these babies. I seperated the parents and the babies, but thats about all I could think of. Are the hard to raise? I don't know if the parents ate some of them or what, because when I saw the babies there was only 11?
